4.5 inch reflector telescope problem?

Tim J asked: This may sound strange…..but when I look at the moon thru my telescope, I seem to see the air rippling in front of the moon, kind of like heat rays coming from the back of a fighterplane before takeoff. Is this bad optics? or an atmospereic thing?
