Simply staggering. This song was light years ahead of it’s time in the same way Captain Beefheart was. A tremendous performance and Gilmour really rips the **** out of his guitar in the solo. Fucking fantastic.

I am sure Rick must of remembered doing this with Syd in Studio 3 at A R studios. Rick’s work on Piper is the “Colophon” – that finishing touch and that is why Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Along with Love’s Forever Changes) inspired music to be an accepted art form. There have been other inimitable pieces of music that came later, Bowie’s Ziggy and Low, Roxy’s first two albums but 5 years before Syd wrote this peach of a track.

Poor Rick. God bless him. While I understand people do pass on, cancer is such a terrible, painful death. I hope that his passing was as peaceful as that dreaded illness would allow, or that morphine was administered in high dosages when Rick’s time to go was nearing. No one should have to suffer so tremendously.

Rest in Peace, Richard Wright.
He, along with David Gilmour, were responsible for much of the epic musicianship of Pink Floyd, most notably the atmospheric tones and rhythms that were an iconic part of the band.

I love Waters but this is simply not the sort of thing he could have written, which is not to say he couldn’t write good “space opera”. Just not this. The brief moment of Syd’s streak was like a meteor. Whereas Roger Waters was like a slow moving comet. Both were spectacular, but only Syd left your cornea on fire. If Waters’s genius was distinctive, Syd’s was distinctively distinctive. Was he more innovative?…I think so.
