astronomy
Megan asked:

It’s for a competition relating to only variable stars and I know basically nothing about astronomy. I don’t need a book on how to observe them, just more on the information about them. It would also be helpful if it would contain information about the most famous ones.

I use “Discovering the Cosmos” by R.C. Bless for my college astronomy 101 course. It has a good deal of info on stars and the sun

“Universe” by Roger A. Freedman is a great astronomy text for just about anyone. It has about 200 pages on stars, everything from how they form to our sun to neutron stars and supernovae.

you should do a search on textbook411.com , its the best place to find any textbook you need (they search all the top online bookstores for the best price ) and you can buy a used copy to save some money, good luck in the competition!
